Employers are obliged to carry out adequate testing of portable electrical equipment under the Electricity  at Work Regulations 1989. The testing should be carried out in a manner to ensures employees are not put at risk of coming into contact with electrical energy.

The requirement to test portable electrical equipment covers commercial and industrial premises.
